    • Abstract:
The article discusses sustainable living in Latin America, focusing on the community of Las Gaviotas, Colombia. The history of the community's development by founder Paolo Lugari 40 years ago is described. The community's use of wind power and hand water pumps defied technological skepticism that existed then. In 1978, the Gaviotas was designated as a model community by the United Nations Development Programme. Gaviotas is known for a lack of government hierarchy. Its history of involvement in building solar water heaters and harvesting pine resins as a natural resource is discussed.
