This article problematizes how despite education is and has been a means to combat the injustices that indigenous peoples have suffered through history; these proposals have been shaped without considering their culture as a stepping point. Reflecting on the origins of education in indigenous peoples and how intercultural education is understood, this article develops a documentary and historical revision of three case studies: Mexico, Colombia, and Guatemala, in order to identify similarities and differences among these countries regarding education in indigenous communities, and recover the meaningful experiences to achieve an intercultural bilingual education. El eje del escrito, es problematizar que la educación intercultural es y ha sido un medio para combatir las injusticias que han sufrido los pueblos indígenas; sin embargo las propuestas se han gestado al margen de su cultura. Se realiza una revisión documental e histórica sobre el origen de la educación dirigida a esta población. El estudio considera tres casos: México, Colombia y Guatemala, con la finalidad de identificar los problemas a los que se han enfrentado, así como coincidencias y diferencias en cada caso; y, a la vez, recuperar las experiencias significativas en favor de una educación intercultural bilingüe.
