      The article discusses the history of and political conditions in Colombia. Colombia was inhabited by indigenous societies during the pre-Columbian period. Spanish settlements were established beginning in the 16th century. The first representative council to defy Spanish authority was created on July 20, 1810. Simon Bolivar was elected as Colombia's first president. The period known as La Violencia started with the assassination of Liberal leader Jorge Eliecer Gaitan in 1948. Drug production grew during President Andres Pastrana's administration.
