    • Abstract:
We studied germination dynamics and seed dormancy for experimentally buried seeds, and also seedling recruitment from disseminated seeds in the field for two populations of Puya cryptantha and P. trianae. Seed germination began in april and their proportions were low (0.031±0.003) but vary little during the rest of the year. Most of the seeds did not germinate (0.900±0.004) and were viable at the end of the year. The proportion of germinated seeds under laboratory conditions after buried one year (0.443±0.063) was significantly less than the proportion of viable seeds for the same period of time. Seedling recruitment success in the field was low (0.047±0.006). Our results suggest that germination is associated with the beginning of the rainy season and that other factors (probably light) cause an enforced dormancy in buried seeds. We demonstrate that at the end of the study a fraction of the seeds was in a state of induced dormancy and that both species have the capacity to form persistent seed banks. We propose that the same factors causing enforced dormancy in buried seeds can be acting as limiting factors for seedling establishment under natural conditions.
