    • Abstract:
Summary: The April 19 Movement M19 grew from a failed presidential campaign by a populist (and former military dictator) in 1970. It became famous for staging outlandish attacks, such as a sixty-one-day siege of the Dominican embassy and a take-over of the Palace of Justice in which 100 died. M19 consistently engaged in political campaigns, including one failed presidential amnesty in 1984 and another successful amnesty in 1990, after which M19 continued operating as a political party that garnered 16 percent of the vote in 1990. A faction refused the 1990 amnesty and continued operations through 2001.
