Narrative Identity in the Novel Hdeel, a Free Lady: The Formation of the Self Between the Weight of History and the Freedom of Imagination.

تتناول هذه الدراسة تشكل الهوية السردية في رواية هديل سيدة حرة للروائي المغربي البشير الدامون، عبر مساءلة العلاقة المتوترة بين سلطة الوثيقة التاريخية وحرية التخييل داخل فضاء الرواية التاريخية. وتنطلق من سؤال مركزي: كيف تتبلور هوية الذات سردياً وهي تتأرجح بين العينية بوصفها ثباتاً وإرثاً تاريخياً وجماعياً، والإنية بوصفها قدرة على الاختيار والتحول والمسؤولية؟. وبالاستناد إلى المنظور التأويلي عند بول ريكور ، تُحلّل الدراسة الهوية السردية بوصفها بناءً دينامياً يتولد من توتر مستمر بين قطبي الثبات والتحول، وتبرز دور الحبكة كالية تخييلية تُعيد تنظيم شتات الوقائع التاريخية في نسيج دال يتجاوز التوثيق إلى إنتاج المعنى. تطبيقياً، تتتبع الدراسة تجليات العينية في هوية البطلة عبر الهجنة الثقافية (عربية - قشتالية)، وجرح الذاكرة الجمعية المرتبط بسقوط غرناطة والتهجير، والموروث الأسطوري المتمثل في الحمامة المنتظرة" التي تنقلب من وعد خلاص إلى عبء وجودي. وفي المقابل، ترصد تجليات الإنية عبر مسارات تصاعدية تبدأ بالاختيار الأخلاقي الذي يخترق منطق الثأر، ثم تتجسد في الحب والأمومة بوصفهما فضاءين للتحرر من أدوار الحرب، لتبلغ ذروتها في المساءلة النقدية للأسطورة والتحول من التلقي السلبي إلى الفاعلية التأويلية. وتخلص الدراسة إلى أن الرواية تقدم الهوية بوصفها صيرورة سردية مفتوحة تتشكل عبر التفاعل بين ثقل التاريخ وحرية الذات، بما يؤسس لهوية مركبة تنتصر للفعل الإنساني في مواجهة الجبر التاريخي. This study investigates the formation of narrative identity in Hdeel, a Free Lady by the Moroccan novelist Bachir Dammoun, by examining the tension between the authority of historical documentation and the freedom of literary imagination within the space of historical fiction. It addresses a central question: how does the self’s identity take shape narratively while oscillating between idem-identity, understood as stability and inherited collective history, and ipse-identity, understood as the capacity for choice, transformation, and responsibility?. Drawing on Paul Ricœur’s hermeneutic perspective, the study conceptualizes narrative identity as a dynamic construct emerging from the ongoing tension between permanence and change, highlighting the role of plot as an imaginative mechanism that reorganizes dispersed historical facts into a meaningful narrative fabric that moves beyond mere documentation toward the production of interpretation and meaning. On the applied level, the study traces manifestations of idem-identity through the heroine’s hybrid heritage (Arab–Castilian), the wound of collective memory associated with the fall of Granada and forced displacement, and the inherited myth of the "waiting dove," which shifts from a promise of salvation into an existential burden. Conversely, it examines manifestations of ipse-identity through ascending trajectories that begin with ethical choice that disrupts the logic of vengeance, then unfold through love and motherhood as spaces of liberation from war-imposed roles, culminating in a critical interrogation of the myth and a shift from passive reception to interpretive agency. The study concludes that the novel presents identity as an open-ended narrative process of becoming, shaped through the interplay between the weight of history and the freedom of the self, thereby constructing a complex identity that affirms human agency in the face of historical determinism.
