- Abstract:
The article is an open letter to unsuccessful applicants for academic jobs, explaining why many applicants are not hired. It notes that many applicants, it seems, do not read or take seriously the wording in the job listing. Reasons for removing people from consideration for a job include not having the qualifications specifically stated in the job listing, seeming to be uncomfortable teaching minority students, and not having at least one peer-reviewed article or book. It also notes that the cover letter should state precise and convincing reasons for applying for a particular job. It further notes that hiring committee members can be expected to look for information on applicants through the Google search engine and other publicly available sources.
