Abstract: In many Slavic cultures, there is a long-standing prohibition to ask a person about their further plans/actions, in particular, to ask the question "Where are you going? . This ban still persists among modern Ukrainians, a sociolinguistic survey of 208 respondents from 23 region of Ukraine showed the existence of a wide corpus of euphemistic expressions and answers to this question today. The article analyzes the corresponding euphemistic verbal formulas and clarifies their functional purpose and active constructions. As a result of the survey, 94 euphemistic expressions were recorded, which are used to avoid a direct answer to the question "Where are you going?". Euphemistic answers are grouped according to the strategies of the addressee’s communicative behavior: 1) to warn the addressee against a taboo question; 2) to reorient the answer to the addressee; 3) to divert the addressee’s attention from a specific place and provide answers of an indefinite nature. The last group turned out to be the most numerous and includes verbal formulas, which are based on various nominative units: toponyms (real and mythical – Kudykini Mountains), common names of loci, names of the animal world, objects, proper and common names of people, mythical characters, somatisms. The attested euphemistic answers to the question "Where are you going?" among modern Ukrainians are aimed, on the one hand, at avoiding a direct answer, and on the other hand, at the desire not to offend the interlocutor by the lack of an answer and to draw the image of a tolerant person-addressee. In order to hide unwanted information from the addressee and avoid negative associations, a wide range of verbal formulas is used, which indicates the high adaptability of the linguistic consciousness of the Ukrainian and the ability to create new forms of expression that correspond to traditional cultural and social norms. ; У багатьох слов’янських культурах існує давня заборона розпитувати людину про її подальші плани/дії, зокрема, ставити питання "Куди йдеш?". ...
