- Abstract:
The paper aims to reflect on the impact of artificial intelligence on money, as well as on the connected payment system and on the management of monetary policy. In particular, the new form of digital currency can no longer be considered only as a payment instrument, value reserve, and unit of account, but also as a “tool to collect data about its users” and an “instrument for pursuing, more directly, monetary policy objectives”. In this situation, the central bankers cannot remain unarmed, only with cash, leaving this digitized-enhanced money in the hands of commercial banks and BigTech. How the central bankers should act, what type of digital currency should introduce, and, more importantly, what should be the relationship with private parties are fundamental issues that all legal systems will have to address and resolve, in the awareness that the management of this new currency, enhanced by artificial intelligence, entails greater powers but also greater responsibilities.
