- Abstract:
Nitrogen in a form suitable for feeding a population of microbes in a bioreactor is produced by reacting nitrogen gas and hydrogen gas to form ammonia plus an unreacted gas stream under conditions favorable to having little unreacted nitrogen gas in the unreacted gas stream. The ammonia, or a compound derived from the ammonia is fed to the microbes and the unreacted gas stream is optionally fed back into the reaction, or fed into the bioreactor. Oxygen can be produced, such as by electrolysis, and also provided to the microbes. Hydrogen from the electrolysis can be added to the hydrogen being reacted with nitrogen gas, and/or can be added to the bioreactor. Where nitrogen gas is produced from air separation, the residual gases can be another source of oxygen.
- Claim:
1. A method comprising: separating nitrogen from air to produce a nitrogen gas stream and an oxygen-rich gas stream; reacting the nitrogen gas stream with a first hydrogen gas stream to produce an ammonia stream and an unreacted gas stream; and growing a population of microbes in a liquid medium within a bioreactor, including providing at least some of the ammonia, or a soluble nitrogen compound derived from the ammonia, to the bioreactor, and further including providing at least some of the oxygen-rich gas stream to the bioreactor.
- Claim:
2. The method of claim 1 wherein reacting the nitrogen gas stream with the first hydrogen gas stream is performed in a reactor without a catalyst.
- Claim:
3. The method of claim 1 wherein reacting the nitrogen gas stream with the first hydrogen gas stream produces the unreacted gas stream wherein a ratio of hydrogen to nitrogen is greater than 1, wherein the method further comprises introducing the unreacted gas stream into the bioreactor.
- Claim:
4. The method of claim 1 further comprising storing at least some of the ammonia stream in a reservoir, and wherein providing at least some of the ammonia, or the soluble nitrogen compound, to the bioreactor includes withdrawing the ammonia from the reservoir.
- Claim:
5. The method of claim 1 further comprising varying a ratio of hydrogen to nitrogen being reacted to produce the ammonia stream and the unreacted gas stream.
- Claim:
6. The method of claim 1 further comprising performing both a steam methane reformation reaction and a water-gas shift reaction to produce a stream including both hydrogen and CO2; and separating the stream including both hydrogen and CO2 into a second hydrogen stream and a CO2 stream, wherein at least some of the CO2 stream is provided to the bioreactor, and at least some of the second hydrogen stream is provided as the first hydrogen stream.
- Claim:
7. The method of claim 1 further comprising gasifying a carbon-containing substrate to produce a gas stream including carbon monoxide.
- Claim:
8. The method of claim 1 further comprising receiving a flow of water and producing from the water both a second hydrogen stream and an oxygen stream, and providing at least some of the second hydrogen stream as the first hydrogen stream.
- Claim:
9. The method of claim 8 further comprising providing at least some of the oxygen stream to the bioreactor.
- Claim:
10. The method of claim 1 further comprising regulating the introduction of ammonia into the bioreactor based on a signal from a nitrogen sensor disposed within the bioreactor.
- Claim:
11. The method of claim 10 further comprising providing at least some of the unreacted gas stream to the bioreactor, and regulating a flow of the unreacted gas stream into the bioreactor responsive to a signal from a hydrogen sensor disposed in the bioreactor in addition to that from the nitrogen sensor.
