The article discusses research demonstrating how higher magnesium levels can protect the brain. Topics covered include magnesium's ability to reverse cognitive deficits typical of Alzheimer's disease, restoration of synaptic functions, depression and low-levels of magnesium intake, extinction of fear memory, regulation of the main stress-response system and protein that promotes learning and adaptability, and synthesis of substance needed for nerve impulses' transmission in the brain.
