The article discusses the history of sufism in Fatimid Egypt and the problem of historiographical inertia. Topics include the development of sufism as a social movement and identifiable tradition, Islamic scholar Ibn al-Jawzī's critique of Abū Nu'aym's inclusive approach to Sufi history, and the critical role of the transmission of hadith and the pursuit of scholarship in the dissemination of sufism.
