- Abstract:
This article focuses on the negative impacts of the increased level of homocysteine. Elevated blood levels of homocysteine may now be added to the list of risk factors for osteoporosis, according to a new study from the Netherlands. Those with the highest homocysteine levels had nearly twice the risk of an osteoporotic fracture during three to eight years of follow-up, compared to those with lower levels, independent of other risk factors, including age, weight, smoking and nutrient intake. Homocysteine was not associated with bone mineral density.
