    • Abstract:
On Dec. 5, Vermont became the second recipient, following the District of Columbia, to receive approval from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to allow Medicaid reimbursement for inpatient stays at free‐standing institutions for mental disease (IMDs). The federal guidance will allow state Medicaid programs to waive the long‐standing payment exclusion in order to treat individuals with serious mental illness/serious emotional disturbance (SMI/SED) in residential settings.
