The article discusses research which aimed to identify specific constituents of bituminous coal smoke that might be especially harmful far beyond rural China. It references a study by Roel Vermeule, published in an issue of "Environmental Health Perspectives." Topics covered include the association of bituminous coal with cancer risk, the incidence of lung cancer in relation to coal-related pollutant exposure, and the strongest association found in 25 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH).
