      The article focuses on planning for a career of general practitioners (GP). It is possible to have a rewarding and fulfilling career in general practice. However, one has to plan for professional happiness. GPs will need to be aware of health care governance and know the rules, regulations and standards that apply to general practice. Doctors who get into difficulty have had little opportunity for personal growth, a large workload, little support, role ambiguity, and lack of control over decisions in their job. Doctors who combine clinical work with outside commitments (clinical or non-clinical) report greater professional satisfaction.
