- Abstract:
The article raises environmental justice concern on racial and ethnic inequalities in exposure to potentially toxic chemicals in personal care products, with reference to a study which documented the potential link between use of hair straighteners and uterine leiomyoma. It argues that hair-based discrimination penalizes Black people. Limitations of the study include lack of information on the type or brand of hair straighteners used and lack of verification of self-reported fibroid diagnoses.
