      The article reports on the use of technological innovations in the field of medicine. A recent article described how a farmer living in the U.S. controlled the gates in his Oxfordshire farm via an Internet link to ensure that his herd enjoyed the best grazing at all times. A diagnostic support system for GPs was tested in the Netherlands eight years ago. Algorithm-based diagnosis is, of course, alive. Although NHS Direct was piloted in 1998, it remains in its infancy, and its role is still being evaluated. Early research compared the disposal of patients assessed using different algorithms, and showed marked discrepancies.
