The article focuses on the increase in the construction of freestanding emergency departments (ED) in suburban areas in the United States. It provides a description of the freestanding ED built by the Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. Freestanding ED usually do not need to have separate state licensure, but they operate under an existing hospital's license. It discusses the moratorium imposed by Florida for such ED.
