The article discusses the National Guard Youth Challenge Academy located in Rantoul, Illinois, a military style school where high school dropouts can earn general equivalency diplomas. The academy's cadets attend class, exercise, drill, and perform community service. Congress has been funding Youth Challenge academies since 1993 and there are currently programs in 26 states and Puerto Rico. Approximately 7,000 youths earn high school diplomas each year through these academies.
