The article reports on the steps some of the world's largest cities are taking to curb transportation problems. Curitiba, Brazil, has a long running bus service that is subsidized by the city that has now been largely replaced by trains. Quito, Ecuador, and Bogotá, Colombia, have copied Curitiba's system. In wealthy and oil dependent countries, public transport is discouraged by subsidies and lack of funding.
