- Abstract:
The article focuses on new genomic technologies that allow the study of populations of microorganisms in human bodies, providing important insights to obesity and other health problems. New deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)-sequencing technologies allow scientists to study the genetic makeup of entire microbial communities. Microbiologist Jeffrey Gordon and his team have been investigating the complex microbial world inside mice and humans, attempting to determine how bacteria influence health. Gordon, who studied the bacterial populations of fat and lean mice, has found that mice genetically engineered to be obese harbored different populations of microbes than lean mice.
