- Abstract:
The article discusses whether tax cuts enacted under U.S. President George W. Bush and due to expire at the end of 2010 should be extended. Some who previously supported the reductions, including former Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan and former Bush economic advisor Glenn Hubbard, now believe they should be allowed to lapse due to the large federal deficit. However, high levels of unemployment and weakness in the U.S. economy provide a rationale for prolonging them. U.S. President Barack Obama has proposed maintaining the cuts for nearly all taxpayers.
