- Abstract:
The article presents a profile of the history of Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont and examines how the school has used educational innovations and reforms to survive financially since its inception in 1938. Particular focus is paid to the low-residency adult education program and student-guided curriculum offered at the school as well as the role played by Goddard founder Royce S. "Tim" Pitkin and former director of adult education Evalyn Bates in establishing the progressive educational aims of Goddard. Other topics include higher educational reforms in the U.S., notable alumni of Goddard, and comments from Goddard president Barbara Vacarr and Goddard graduate Rod Crossman.
