Maximizing votes in 2007 council elections in Medellin city: Statistical analysis with continuous variables as an example of the use of quantitative methods in the analysis of policy issues. (English)

The use of quantitative methods in political analysis is increasing in political science. These methods offer simple techniques and related to the reality. This article aims to illustrate the use of quantitative methods in political analysis. For this, we utilized the most used quantification methods with electoral variables, in order to give the reader a better understanding of these methods (univariate statistics, multivariate, econometrics and game theory). Here, we take a maximization votes problem in the elections of council in Medellin city in 2007 and performed a statistical analysis with continuous and categorical variables, in order to illustrate in a didactic way how mathematics is implemented in a real case. El uso de métodos cuantitativos en el análisis político es cada vez mayor en la ciencia política. Estos ofrecen técnicas sencillas y relacionadas con la realidad. El presente artículo tiene como objetivo ilustrar el uso de los métodos cuantitativos en el análisis de temas políticos. Se utilizan para ello los métodos de cuantificación más usados haciendo uso de variables electorales, con el objetivo de dar una mayor comprensión al lector de estos métodos (estadística univariada, multivariada, econometría y teoría de juegos). Se toma un problema de maximización de votos en las elecciones del Concejo de la ciudad de Medellín en 2007 y se realiza un análisis estadístico con variables continuas y categóricas, con el fin de ilustrar de manera didáctica cómo se pone en práctica el uso de la matemática en un caso real.
