- Abstract:
Discusses a new study conducted by researchers Arline T. Geronimus of the University of Michigan and Sanders D. Korenman of the Princeton University, suggesting that teenage motherhood may be less harmful for the economy than is commonly supposed. Arguments claiming individual's economic failure as a cause, rather than an effect, of teen child bearing; Attributes that are commonly associated with the economic failure of a teenage mother; Analysis of the notion that teenage motherhood might be a symptom of poverty rather than a cause; Findings of the comparative analysis of the economic status of teenage mothers with that of their sibling sisters who delayed child-bearing until at least up to the age 20; Analysis of the impact of teen child-bearing on subsequent family income; Conclusion that much of the economic failure commonly associated with teenage motherhood really stems from disadvantaged social backgrounds.
