The article focuses on case studies concerning biodiversity conservation and poverty alleviation in Madagascar. It talks about the protected areas Anjozorobe-Angavo and Loky-Manambato, which are co-managed by local community institutions and the Malagasy nongovernmental organization Fanamby, and the dry forest and wetland complex co-managed by local communities and the nonprofit Peregrine Fund. It talks about the community-managed marine protected area Velondriake in the Indian Ocean.
