- Abstract:
School systems across the country continue to face challenges with teacher turnover and persistent shortages in high-need schools and hard-to-staff subjects. Addressing these challenges requires leaders to have a keen understanding of which teachers are leaving which roles in which schools in the district. Typically, turnover analyses look at a single district or across a handful of districts nationally. A statewide approach, however, can reveal not only which teachers are leaving, but also where they are going. This study analyzed teacher employment and school demographic data for all public school systems (district and charter) in the state of Texas, acquired from the State of Texas Public Education Information Management System (PEIMS). The data files include snapshots of teacher employment as of October 1 of 2022 and 2023. This represents teachers who teach a significant portion--more than 10%--of all public-school students in the United States. This dataset revealed if a teacher went to another district--including exactly what district or network and school they moved to--or if they left teaching in the state of Texas, to provide insights for state and district leaders to support all schools in retaining and attracting a high-quality teaching force.
