O lubelskim słowniku stereotypów i symboli ludowych

Artykuł stanowi syntetyczną prezentację założeń Słownika stereotypów i symboli ludowych (SSiSL), który jest oryginalnym dziełem polskich etnolingwistów, zaprojektowanym w latach 70. XX wieku i realizowanym przez zespół pracowników UMCS w Lublinie. Do roku 2012 wydano cztery części I tomu, poświęcone językowo-kulturowemu obrazowi kosmosu. Całość ma objąć 7 tomów: I. Kosmos, II. Rośliny, III. Zwierzęta, IV. Człowiek, V. Społeczeństwo, VI. Religia. Demonologia, VII. Czas. Przestrzeń. Miary. Kolory. Autorzy omawiają podstawowe założenia teoretyczne słownika, a na przykładzie hasła "Tęcza" pokazują, jak zbudowane są artykuły hasłowe w Słowniku. Omawiają też kluczowe pojęcia, takie jak językowy obraz świata, stereotyp, symbol i definicja kognitywna, która ma fasetowy układ zdań definiujących, podkreślają, że definicja kognitywna ma charakter narracyjny i jest tekstem kultury (w rozumieniu semiotyki tartuskiej), na koniec odnotowują najważniejsze głosy recenzentów polskich i zagranicznych o Słowniku. ON THE LUBLIN-COMPILED DICTIONARY OF FOLK STEREOTYPES AND SYMBOLS The article is a synthetic presentation of the major assumptions behind and the principles of the compilation of the Dictionary of Folk Stereotypes and Symbols, an original publication conceived in the 1970s and produced by a team of ethnolinguists at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (UMCS), Lublin, Poland. The complete dictionary will consist of seven volumes, whose content replicates the order of the act of creation: from inanimate things, to humans and the general categories that organize reality (vol. 1: Cosmos; vol. 2: Plants; vol. 3: Animals; vol. 4: Humans; vol. 5: Society; vol. 6: Religion and Demonology; vol. 7: Time, Space, Measures, and Colours). Major theoretical assumptions behind the compilation of the dictionary are discussed; the structure of the dictionary entry is exemplifi ed with Tęcza 'rainbow'. Key concepts are explained, such as the linguistic worldview, stereotypes, symbol, cognitive defi nition. The latter is a kind of defi nition that is supposed to show how speakers understand words (not what words mean); it has a facet-like organization of the defi ning sentences; it is narrative in nature and can be considered a text of culture (in the understanding of the Tartu semiotic school). Finally, the most important points raised by reviewers of the dictionary from Poland and outside of Poland are mentioned.
