Abstract: This article is an excerpt from the Course Completion Work in the Journalism Course at the Department of Social Communication at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. The objective of this study is to present the degree of understanding of the political and economic editorials of Jornal Nacional among viewers living in the peripheral neighborhood of Mãe Luiza, located in the East Zone of Natal (RN). To measure the intelligibility of such editorials, we carried out bibliographical and qualitative research with residents of the aforementioned neighborhood, administered questionnaires, and carried out individual interviews and in the form of a focus group. We understand that the knowledge produced by journalism is essential for the full exercise of citizenship and, consequently, for the maintenance and strengthening of democratic societies.
