Licenciatura en Historia ; The importance of the photographic image is not only the combination of art and tech¬nique, a few decades ago constituted a valuable source of historical documentation. The photographic activity, dating from 1839, revolutionized the ways of seeing, capture and represent places and social dynamics. This research is about Winfield Scott American pho¬tographer, his visual production and the tour Michoacán state. The challenges and prob¬lems for classification and authentication of photographic corpus, which was selected from two major photographic archives of our country are discussed. From the iconographic analysis of the Scott photographic work, the corpus is divided into themes such as taking care representation of characters known as “stereotypes”, which in comparison dynamics are analyzed with two art forms: paintings race, and nineteenth-century lithograph, in order to understand the process of transmission, reception and assimilation of the ste¬reotype as an iconographic tradition built from the outside, and so-called “stereotypes” were popular through the great publishing industry (postcards) as elements to identify and strengthen the stereotype of “the mexican” ; La importancia de la imagen fotográfica no sólo radica en que combina el arte y técnica, sino que desde hace unas décadas se constituyó en una valiosa fuente de documentación histórica. La actividad fotográfica, que data desde 1839, revolucionó las formas de ver, capturar y representar los espacios y dinámicas sociales. En esta investigación se analiza la trayectoria del fotógrafo norteamericano Winfield Scott y la producción visual realizada en su recorrido por el estado de Michoacán. Se plantean los retos y problemáticas para la clasificación y autentificación del corpus fotográfico, el cual fue seleccionado de dos im¬portantes fototecas de nuestro país.
