Abstract: The process of impediment of President Dilma Rousseff in 2016 was one of the biggest blows that the young Brazilian democracy suffered. In this sense, this article aims to critically analyze the conjuncture of this political media event against Brazilian democratic institutions from the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis. To do so, Fairclough (2003) and Silva (2019) are used as a theoretical-methodological framework in a multidisciplinary dialogue with Souza (2016) and Guerra (2017), in view of the interpretative nature and qualitative nature of this research. The main observations point to an effective contribution by the Brazilian hegemonic media in the process of legitimizing the 2016 coup.
