Abstract: This paper addresses the intersectionality between mental health and racial questions and focuses on the black population of Brazil. At first, the history of mental health in the country is discussed, highlighting the role of manicomial policies in the control of the black population. In spite of the progress of the anti-asylum fight and implementation of public policies, the racial question is often neglected in the context of mental health care, perpetuating institutional racism. Black movement organizations have played a crucial role in drafting and implementing policies that aim to tackle racial disparities in mental health. The paper also presents a literature overview, highlighting how institutional racism affects the mental health of the black population, with examples of discrimination in different sectors of society.
