A herança dos “mal-nascidos”: Dos filhos do passado aos filhos da ciência

Apresentam-se alguns dos resultados obtidos num estudo sobre o quotidiano de risco genético de cancro hereditário. Seguindo uma metodologia qualitativa, avaliou-se todo o trabalho de gestão individual desse risco, desde o momento do diagnóstico ao accionar dos mecanismos, estratégias e concepções que, quotidianamente, permitem dar sentido ao acontecido. A perspectiva analítica que é possível esboçar, a partir dos relatos individuais, no respeitante à representação social da doença, estrutura-se em torno do tempo que o cancro “rouba” e do tempo que o cancro hereditário “dá” e remete para a importância do clima de aceitação positiva do risco, expresso nos desejos individuais e colectivos de um futuro melhor garantido pela evolução científica e tecnológica. Frente ao risco genético de que os sujeitos são portadores e que escapa à sua lógica de controlo, a pressão é colocada sobre a ciência (genética) e a medicina, cujo poder e prestígio nunca são questionados. ; This paper presents some of the results of a study on the daily life of people at genetic risk for hereditary cancer. Following a qualitative methodology, this study assessed all the work of individual management of that risk, from the time of the diagnosis to the setting in motion of the mechanisms, strategies and conceptions that allow people to give meaning to what has happened. Based on individual reports, the analytic perspective regarding the social representation of the disease is structured around the time that cancer “takes away” and the time that hereditary cancer “gives”, and it points to the importance of an attitude of positive acceptance of the risk, expressed in both individual and collective hopes for a better future, which is guaranteed by scientific and technological evolution.
