Abstract: Ice accumulation on surfaces presents significant challenges in aerospace, energy, and infrastructure industries. This chapter explores various strategies for achieving icephobicity and focuses on the role of surface chemistry. It discusses different approaches, including superhydrophobic surfaces, slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS), polymeric and hydrated coatings, and nanoscale carbon coatings. The effectiveness of all these methods in repelling water, delaying ice nucleation, and reducing ice adhesion strength is explored. In addition, various emerging strategies, such as bio-inspired anti-freeze proteins and photothermal materials are also highlighted.
