      The commercial strategies employed by cocoa trading networks in the 18th century are investigated through the tracking of specific businesses, as well as distribution patterns and adaptation according to local and regional conditions. The results highlight three key factors for the competitiveness of Guayaquil cocoa: the water advantages in the Guayas watershed, the concentration of production in areas connected to this watershed, and the effectiveness of export networks. It is argued that these factors were crucial in ensuring a consistent production for export, transforming the Guayas watershed into a center for production and trade. Primary sources from American and European archives are used, supplemented with secondary sources to enrich the historical context. ; Se investigan las estrategias comerciales empleadas por redes de comercio de cacao (siglo XVIII) mediante seguimiento de negocios específicos, así como de los patrones de distribución y adaptación según condiciones locales y regionales. Los resultados destacan tres factores claves para la competitividad del cacao guayaquileño: las ventajas hídricas en la cuenca del Guayas, la concentración de la producción en zonas conectadas a esta cuenca y la efectividad de las redes exportadoras. Se argumenta que dichos factores fueron clave para garantizar una producción constante destinada a la exportación, transformando la cuenca del Guayas en un centro de producción y comercio.
