      The first years in the teaching profession are of utmost importance for the professional knowledge and identiy of the young teacher. This paper characterises the situation and problems lived by young teachers certified by the FCUL. The research methodology follows an interpretative framework based in case studies. The results suggest that there are positive aspects in the way these teachers integrate themselves in the school activities. These aspects may be attributed to (i) the fact that the practicum was very positively considered by all of them, (ii) the formal and informal activities that some schools undertook in order to include these new teachers, (iii) their initial teacher education, and (iv) their participation in research and professional activities. However, the cases also suggest that the education received in the 4th year was not successful in stressing the importance of the interaction of theory and theoretical reflection in teacher’s professional practice. In this study, the beginning teachers showed, in spite of the difficulties, to be enjoying their job. In some cases, they manifest a concern for their professional development and an interest in looking for information that might be relevant for their teaching. Moreover, some are undertaking professional projects for their own development. ; Os primeiros anos da profissão docente são muito importantes no desenvolvimento do conhecimento e identidade profissional do jovem professor. Este artigo caracteriza a situação e os problemas vividos por jovens professores diplomados pela FCUL. A metodologia de investigação inscreve-se num quadro interpretativo, sendo baseada em estudos de caso.
