the central problem addressed in this article, tangentially treated by some researchers, refers to the way in which the leaders of the self-proclaimed “provisional government” acted to sustain and legitimize the rebellion and coup d'état that they perpetrated in New Granada against the constitutional government in 1854. The objective is then to show that the actions of these men were not limited to the military action that they had to deploy in response to the reaction of their adversaries, but rather were aimed at legitimizing their decision to take the government of the state by force, to wage war and to build an alternative political project to the one that the Liberal and Conservative parties were trying to impose. To demonstrate the validity of our interpretation, we narrate the development of the events and examine the content of the speeches, messages and decisions that they issued and made to show that the “legitimization of the rebellion” was, from the beginning, one of the main tasks that those men undertook. ; el problema central que se aborda en este artículo, tangencialmente tratado por algunos investigadores, refiere a la manera como los dirigentes del autodenominado “Gobierno Provisorio” actuaron para sostener y legitimar la rebelión y el golpe de Estado que perpetraron en Nueva Granada contra el gobierno constitucional en 1854. El objetivo consiste en mostrar que la actuación de esos hombres no se redujo a la acción militar que tuvieron que desplegar ante la reacción de sus adversarios, sino que se orientó a legitimar su decisión de tomar el gobierno del Estado por la fuerza, de hacer la guerra y de construir un proyecto político alternativo al que pretendían imponer los partidos Liberal y Conservador.
