    • Abstract:
The oceans cover two thirds of the earth and supports an enormous amount of life. Life that today is severely threatened by pollution, overfishing and climate change. Despite this, the consumption of fish increases, driving a rapid increase in production. In the past half-century fish farming has begun playing an increasingly important role in producing fish, thereby providing a more ethical alternative. In fish production one important task is to monitor growth and estimate the biomass. The biomass is traditionally estimated from weighing a smaller sample of fish, a sampling method that is time consuming and can cause the fish harm by inflicting injury and stress. Instead, this thesis explores the possibility to use video data for estimating the lengths and the weights of fish. Specifically, the idea is to segment each fish and similarly to the traditional approach sample a few good fish masks to find a length and then the weight. The segmentation masks are found using a pre-trained Mask R-CNN \cite{Mask-R-CNN} that are trained on images annotated with the help of SAM \cite{segment-anything}. Both the annotations and the resulting masks are evaluated for length and weight estimation. In this endeavor, several challenges are encountered, leading to an underestimation of the fish lengths compared to ground truth data. This outcome is attributed to both masks that do not cover the tail fins and the fact that fish in many poses appear shorter than their actual lengths. Despite this, I still think that the method has promise, and that these challenges could be somewhat adequately addressed.
