Abstract: In peripheral countries, cities have undergone extraordinary growth causing the emergence of the largest metropolis. This occurred mainly from the second half of the twentieth century. With urban sprawl expanded the peripheries and have them reside in most cases, the poorest population. This work embodies the concern to understand the experiences of the residents of the urban periphery: what are the meanings and values that they attribute to the place where they live. To get an understanding of the experiences of those who live in the suburbs, we left for the case study in Cesário Alvim neighborhood of Juiz de Fora MG. This district was selected to conduct a study using the principles of Humanistic Geography. Some issues were raised humanistic character, concerning relations with the residents of the place. To apply the concepts of topophilia topophobia of Yi-Fu Tuan, a field survey was conducted in which the subjects were interviewed in order to assess how they identify with the place and your living space. The research methodology was adjusted with the goal proposed and the theoretical approach. Qualitative research with theoretical basis in phenomenology was used to be the one that serves the purpose it was intended to work. The qualitative applied research helped to understand the phenomenon from the perspective of the subject.
