Abstract: This habilitation thesis offers a multilevel analysis of leadership, using gender as a guiding thread. Drawing on a body of both quantitative and qualitative research, the study examines how gender influences the individual, collective, and organizational dynamics of leadership, and how these different levels interact to shape leadership trajectories, particularly for women. At the individual level, our work highlights the impact of traits, stereotypes, and gender role orientations on leadership perceptions. At the collective level, we explore team dynamics and the tensions associated with shared leadership. At the organizational and societal levels, we analyze the effects of diversity and inclusion policies, as well as the complexity and uniqueness of women’s leadership trajectories. Finally, an epistemological and methodological reflection underscores the need for a plurality of conceptual frameworks and research practices in order to grasp a phenomenon as complex, relational, and situated as leadership. In conclusion, the thesis proposes a research agenda focused on deepening the analysis of gender bias, examining new forms of leadership in response to major contemporary challenges, and developing collaborative research that helps bridge theory and practice.
