      Hand colored divided back postcard with white border. Front: photograph of the exterior front facade of St. Vincent's Hospital from across the road. Includes tree lined street, two automobiles parked in the front and the street with visible streetcar tracks. Front car is parked near a mailbox. All visible buildings are red brick. Upper left on border reads "St. Vincents Hospital, Toledo, Ohio. Back: used divided back with handwritten message and address. Postcard is divided into two sections. Centered over dividing line is inscribed, "Post Card" in green and 19497. The postcard bears a cancelled 2¢ red George Washington stamp, the head appearing within an ellipse on end, with laurel leaves on either side of the ellipse. Above the head are the words U.S. in white Roman letters. At the base of the stamp is the word "CENTS" with the Roman numeral "2" on either side all in white. ; The Sisters of Charity of Montreal, "Grey Nuns," were established in Montreal, Quebec in 1737 by Marguerite d'Youville. Father Alexis Campion traveled to from Toledo to Montreal to persuade the Sisters to open an orphanage the cholera stricken region. Their first US mission was in Toledo in 1855. The sisters purchased two acres of land on Cherry Street at a cost of $2000 for the construction of an asylum and later a hospital. In March, 1875, the building of St. Vincent's was begun and completed in July of the next year, at a cost of over $63,000. The brick building was three stories high above the basement, comprising a center 120x68 feet, with wings extending on either side 46x50 feet, with commodious porticoes. The center or main building comprised the wards, chapel, parlors, community rooms, apothecary's room and office. A central corridor divides the wards. ; Sisters of Charity of Montreal
