On 26 and 27 June, some thirty participants from fourteen countries (Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom) met to take stock of the consequences and prospects of the Council of Europe's Valletta Convention on the Protection of the Archaeological Heritage, thirty years after its signature. The aim was to take stock of the Convention's achievements and to summarise the impact of the adoption and ratification of the Convention by 46 Member States, taking into account the contributions of the Convention, the impact on the heritage, the pitfalls and the prospects. The meeting sought to answer questions such as the perception of the discipline by European citizens, the economic, social and scientific impact (knowledge of European cities and territories), the unforeseen consequences of the Convention, as well as the societal challenges facing archaeology in Europe and how to meet them in the near future. The result is twofold. First, the videos of the 19 conferences are available on the Inrap and CivEUr European Studies Chair websites. Second, the written outcome is this book. It is a compilation of ten articles plus the introductory essay on eight European countries. The various texts deal with the diversity of the Convention's application, the public's attachment to heritage, the growth crisis and potential crises in archaeology.
