Abstract: Agave sisalana Perrine is a plant used in the production of hard fibers, mainly in the Brazillian Northeast. Part of the leaves are used for the production of fiber and the rest becomes waste. The by-product of this plant contains phenolic compounds, carbohydrates and saponins that have applications in the cosmetic area, especially as antioxidants against free radicals that are the main causes of skin aging. The objective of the work was to obtain a polyphenol enriched extract from the residue of Agave sisalana Perrine, to characterize it chemically and to evaluate the antioxidant activity in vitro. The A. sisalana residue was dried, triturated and subjected to the ultrasonication technique under the following conditions: frequency 20 KHz; 2.45 GHz; wave amplitude: 50%; power 45 W; extraction temperature 60 ºC, ethanol / water extractor liquid: 50%, in the proportion of 1 g of the solid sample / 30 mL of the solvent, 60 minutes. The extract obtained was characterized by the dosage of phenolic compounds and the determination of the total flavonoid content, through spectrophotometric methods. The antioxidant activity was determined by the methodologies: total antioxidant capacity (TAC); capacity of reducing power; sequestration of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrilhhydryl radicals (DPPH); copper ion chelation; chelation of iron ions; sequestering activity of hydroxyl radical and sequestration of superoxide ions. The ultrasonication technique proved to be effective in the extraction yield. The studied extract showed phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity in vitro in the different stages of the oxidative cascade, factors that make it promising for use in pro-age cosmetic formulations. ; CNPq ; A Agave sisalana Perrine é uma planta utilizada na produção de fibras duras, principalmente no Nordeste do Brasil.
