Abstract: This thesis focuses on perception and production of French mid-vowels /ə/ - /e/ - /ɛ/ in native Spanish-speaking Colombian learners of French as a foreign language. Based on a series of tasks carried out with 10 participants, learners at intermediate-advanced level at the Alliance française de Bogotá, a certain degree of instability regarding the pronunciation of the target vowels was identified. The main inter-individual aspects that the experimental protocol revealed are the alternating perception and production of the /e/ - /ɛ/ phonemes as well as an aperture and fronting of /ə/ in the context of semi-spontaneous production tasks. Discussed within the framework of SLM (The Speech Learning Model), the results of the different tasks are in compliance with the idea of L1-L2 cross-linguistic influence and the composition of an individual phonetic space for each learner in which category formation for the new sounds takes place. Following the results of the analyses, a pronunciation teaching programme was designed on the basis of a set of exercises and tasks destined for the French as a Foreign Language (FLE) classroom setting. Its main goal is to stabilise learners’ pronunciation of French vowels /ə/ - /e/ - /ɛ/ taking into account the roles of the teacher and of corrective phonetics. This thesis aims to contribute to the teaching and learning of French pronunciation in class whilst exploring new ways of correction and improvement.
