    • Abstract:
This is a 16-inch phonographic disc with recordings on both sides; it plays at 33 1/3 RPM. Side one, track one, contains a segment of the Delaware Farm and Home Hour, which aired on February 27, 1948. In this segment, the host, Virginia Kirkpatrick, spoke with the Extension Home Management Specialist at the University of Delaware, Louise Whitcomb. The discussion focused on safety in farmhouses, and particularly safety regarding falls and falling. Louise Whitcomb provided information gathered in safety surveys conducted by Home Demonstration Club chairmen. The surveys provided detail on accidents that happened in Delaware farm homes. Side two, track one, contains the third part of the program titled “Delaware Schools in Action,” which aired on February 25, 1948. It is unknown where the other parts of the program are located. The purpose of the program was to describe the activities of children during the school day, and it was presented by the faculty and students at Newark High School in cooperation with the State Department of Public Instruction. William Anderson, a senior at Newark High School, takes the audience on a “tour” of the activity programs in the school. The activities included a choir performance as part of an assembly program, a theatrical play on Christopher Columbus, a meeting of the Junior Student Council, and a band playing an entrance march for the Junior-Senior high school. Next, students of the Music Department play Chopin’s Waltz in A-flat major, vocalist Janice Olsen sings a serenade, and we hear a meeting of the Student Council presided by Dick Davis. We also hear the Clerical Assistance Club working on typewriters, the Dramatics Class and Stagecraft Club working on portions of a play, the preparation of the yearbook, a posture correction clinic, a modern dance group, and the civil air patrol. Other groups are mentioned throughout the recording. The audio from this phonographic disc was digitally edited to make it more audible.
