Abstract: A growing body of evidence suggests a strong degree of overlap between the domains of memory and attention (Long, Kuhl, & Chun, 2018; Woodman, Wang, Sutterer, Reinhart, & Fukuda, 2022). In particular, memory encoding and memory retrieval may map onto the external/internal axis of attention (Chun, Golomb, & Turk-Browne, 2011). Whereas external attention constitutes focusing on sensory, environmental information, internal attention constitutes focusing on mental processes and representations. Many studies have revealed that activity the default mode network and spectral power in the alpha band (10-14Hz) track episodic memory retrieval (Kim, 2015) as well as internal attention (Smallwood et al., 2013; Kam et al., 2019).
