    • Abstract:
There has been a significant increase in the number of consultations performed at emergency departments, family doctors and paediatricians over recent years, consequently leading to a saturation of healthcare facilities. The purpose of this study is to analyse the motivations of parents judged to have inappropriately sought emergency pediatric assistance at the Intercommunal hospital of Creteil (IHC). This is a prospective and descriptive study that takes place over two periods (1st to 30th June 2016 and 19th November to 18th December 2016) in IHC’s pediatric emergency department. Data were collected through a questionnaire distributed by the triage nurse to all patients whose health status was considered ‘non-serious’ (those who spontaneously consulted with emergency departments, sorted by the triage nurse as "non-priority" or "relative emergency"). 275 questionnaires were received. 97% of patients have a family doctor or a paediatrician. Parents consult quickly at emergency services often without prior contact with their physician. The reasons most frequently expressed were no improvement or aggravation of symptoms, worry or anxiety, regardless of consultation period. Parental concern for their child’s health and inadequate outpatient care explain a large proportion of the studied consultations. A reorganization of healthcare system and creation of educational tools for parents would positively change the long term behaviour towards emergency consultations.
