Abstract: Measuring hunger and satiety in children is essential to many studies of childhood eating behaviour. Few validated measures currently exist that allow children to make accurate and reliable ratings of hunger/satiety. The ‘Teddy the Bear’ Rating Scale was developed by Bennett and Blissett (2014) to measure hunger and satiety in children. The scale depicts a series of teddy bears with increasing amounts of “food” in their tummies, and ranges from “very hungry” to “very full”, with an option of “just right” in the middle. The scale has previously been validated in children between five and nine years old. This study aims to determine whether the ‘Teddy the Bear’ scale is a valid measure of hunger/satiety in children aged three to five years old. The study also aimed to determine whether children with avid eating tendencies (including reduced satiety responsiveness) report lower levels of fullness than children with typical eating tendencies using this scale. ...
