Condorcet et l’Italie : Lagrange, Frisi et Canterzani

Condorcet a eu avec les savants italiens des relations précoces : d’abord avec Lagrange dès le milieu des années 1760, ensuite avec les hommes des Lumières milanais (en particulier P. Frisi, C. Beccaria et les frères Verri) à partir du début 1767, et à peu près au même moment avec l’ Académie de Bologne et son secrétaire S. Canterzani. Ces relations constituent une source importante et souvent sous-estimée pour la connaissance du jeune Condorcet et plus généralement de certains aspects du mouvement des Lumières. Nous donnons en annexe dix lettres, pour la plupart inédites : cinq de Condorcet à Frisi et cinq entre le mathématicien français et Canterzani. ; From an early period, Condorcet became acquainted with Italian scholars: first with Lagrange as early as the middle of the 1760s, next with the figures of the Milanese enlightenment (particularly P. Frisi, C. Beccaria, and the Verri brothers) starting in the beginning of 1767, and shortly afterward with the Academy of Bologna and its secretary, S. Canterzani. These relations constitute an important and often underestimated source for a knowledge of the young Condorcet and more generally of certain aspects of the Enlightenment. In an appendix, we present ten letters, most of which have been unpublished until now: five from Condorcet to Frisi and five between the French mathematician and Canterzani.
